Natural Dry Skin Treatment

While some people experience dryness of the skin during winter months when there is less moisture in the air, there are many that suffer from natural skin dryness. Using creams and lotions works for many as they not only protect the skin but hydrate it too. Other methods of natural dry skin treatment are to eliminate the causes of dryness as abstain from too much sun, harsh soaps and changes in the diet. Some other natural dry skin treatments are as follows:

  • Natural oils and vitamins: the most effective of the vitamins that work well for the treatment of skin dryness is Vitamin E. Therefore creams containing vitamin E should be purchased. Moreover its effect can be enhanced by supplementing it with vitamin E capsules. This would help the skin from the inside. Other natural remedies include taking natural oils present in flaxseed oil, primrose oil and omega 3 oils that are found in fish.
  • Nutritional changes in the diet: the health of the skin can be greatly improved by consuming fresh fish which would provide the essential omega acids that work very well for treatment of dry skin. Other changes that can be made are lesser intake of beverages like tea and coffee as they act as diuretics that soak up the body water making the skin dry. Water is an essential ingredient for the treatment of dry skin. As opposed to the fact that oils are essential for healthy skin, it is water that is extremely necessary. One should at least drink 8 glasses of water. This would hydrate the skin and keep it healthy and moisturized.
  • Lotions and creams to hydrate the skin: one should use creams and lotions that have ingredients like plant oils, glycerin, herbal extracts etc. as the more natural ingredients that a cream has, the better it works for the skin. Creams containing chemicals like retinol, hydroxyl acids or alpha lipoic acid, exfoliate the skin causing it to become dry and hence must be avoided.

In addition to these treatment methods, increasing home humidity, using moisturizers and night creams are effective ways to treat naturally dry skin.


Extreme Dry Skin Treatment

When the dryness of the skin exceeds the normal limit and there is extreme dryness with an itch, there is more to be done than just using creams and lotions. Itching of skin due to dryness could be an indication of a more serious problem. However the best option in this situation is to consult a dermatologist.

In case of extremely dry skin, doctors usually prescribe antibiotics or prescription medicines for itchy and dry skin. Some may even prescribe steroid cream for the treatment of extremely dry skin. However these should not be used for long as they have potential side effects. Some other extremely dry skin treatments are as follows:

1. Incorporate omegas: essential omega acids like omega 3 and omega 6 are very helpful in combating dry skin. Seeds, nuts and oils of sunflower, evening primrose and soybean are good sources of omega acids. One can even take supplements to fulfill the needs of the required omegas.

2. Lubricate the skin: it is essential to trap the body water and therefore the skin should be lubricated using a moisturizing lotion. Almost all lotions work well for the purpose but the best out of these is the one that includes alpha hydroxy acids.

3. Use moisturizing soap: harsh soaps are like an enemy for dry skin. Therefore as a treatment of dry skin, one must use good moisturizing soap that contains cocoa butter, lanolin or cold cream which would help in moisturizing the skin and reduce dryness.

4. Keep cooler conditions: the air around should be kept cool and therefore the thermostat should be kept a little low. The skin reacts better to moist conditions and therefore efforts should be made to keep the rooms cool.

5. Revitalize the skin: the skin must be constantly revitalized and for this a regular shower with lukewarm water is a good option. Also getting adequate sunshine to get the required dose of Vitamin D with regular exercise will work wonders for the skin.

Extreme dryness of the skin can be treated with the above methods, however the best way is to prevent the skin from getting extremely dry and for this, subtle changes like having lots of water and reducing the intake of tea and coffee are better.

Dry skin is a problem that affects almost everybody. However, some have naturally dry skin while others acquire it due to their lifestyle. There are still some who experience dryness of the skin during the winter months. Whatever the cause of dryness, there are ways that can help in tackling this problem. While some of these are preventive methods others are treatment methods:

Treatments:
The skin that has succumbed to dryness becomes itchy and scaly. Severe itching can lead to bleeding or soreness of the skin. Therefore it is essential to first gauge the severity of the problem. If the itching is mild, it can be treated with various remedies, while the more severe ones have to be treated with prescription drugs and cortisone creams and ointments.

  • Treatment of dry skin starts with first applying creams that contain natural ingredients like glycerin, water, cocoa butter, beeswax and other natural oils like flaxseed oil and primrose oil. These creams act as a soother for the itchy skin.
  • Bathing rituals should be changed by using milder soaps, lukewarm water, short duration of the baths and application of moisturizers right after the bath. These would help in preserving the body oils so that the skin doesn’t dry.
  • Inclusion of vitamins and natural oils in the diet: diet plays an important part as far as skin is concerned. Inclusion of natural oils by way of flaxseed oils and soybean oils can be effective in the treatment of dryness of the skin.
  • Vitamin E is very effective for the skin and therefore capsules and supplements can be introduced to the diet as a treatment method.

Besides the above mentioned treatment methods, there are some preventive measures too that can act as a deterrent to getting dry skin. These include:

  • Avoid the use of over-the-counter creams that are advertised to be helpful in suppressing itching and inflammation.
  • Reduce the intake of beverages like coffee and tea as they soak up the body moisture and make the skin dry.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated.
  • Protect the skin from harmful natural elements like too much sun, wind or cold conditions.
  • Use humidifiers to increase the moisture in the air.
  • Make use of mild and gentle creams and soaps.
