Dry Skin Beneath Eyes Needs Nourishment

Posted by admin on Jan 6, 2010

Article By Gordon P Hall

Dry skin beneath eyes is often caused by the use of cosmetics containing petroleum-based alcohols or other drying ingredients. Frequently, we see complaints from consumers that have tried eye gels containing paraffin. The waxy substance actually worsens the problem.

The skin’s thickness on the face varies. The area underneath the eyes is the thinnest of any portion of the face. Because of that, the area is very delicate and should be treated with great care. Most eye makeup remover is simply too harsh. If you find that the makeup you are using cannot be removed with a gentle cleanser, it’s a good idea to switch brands.

Once you are using gentler cleansers, you may see an improvement in dry skin around eyes. But, the importance of using a good moisturizer cannot be overstated. A nourishing eye gel might also be in order. One of the causes of excessive dryness, as well as an aged appearance, is overexposure to the sun. In one study, a group of people with sun damage volunteered to use a cream containing coenzyme Q10 for three months. At the end of the trial, their skin’s moisture content was nearly 30% better than before.

Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant. Antioxidants prevent and repair free radical damage. Free radicals are always present in the skin’s layers, but during exposure to UV rays from the sun, their number and activity increases greatly. It takes one molecule of coenzyme Q10 to neutralize one free radical molecule. So, the amount of the antioxidant within the skin’s layers decreases dramatically during sun exposure.

The amount of COQ10 and other antioxidants normally present in the skin decreases with age, as well. So, if you don’t start using an antioxidant-rich cream for dry skin beneath eyes, in time, you will start to see wrinkles in the area and probably some sagging, too. Because, as the antioxidant levels decrease, free radical damage increases and free radical damage is one of the primary causes of wrinkles, sagging and other signs of aging.

In other studies, volunteers have used proprietary ingredients like HALOXYL and EYELISS. Both are European ingredients, used for reducing bags and dark circles. The volunteers felt that the ingredients improved softened and moisturized, while providing the other benefits.

Some of the better gels for dry skin around eyes contain HALOXYL, EYELISS and COQ10, as well as other nourishing ingredients. Remember that dryness indicates that your skin’s health is not as good as it could be. All that it takes to restore its health is nourishment.

Vitamin E has long been recommended to improve the skin’s health, even before scientists recognized and understood the benefit of antioxidants or the damage caused by free radicals. You have to be a little careful when buying a vitamin E cream. Most of what is on the market is synthetic, created in the laboratory using petrochemicals. You want natural vitamin E, if you want results.

So, that’s how antioxidants and other nourishing ingredients help get rid of dry skin beneath eyes. If you choose the right gels or creams, you should notice the benefits, immediately.

Posted by admin on Dec 26, 2009

Dry skin is a common problem encountered during the winter. Cold air causes the water levels in the skin evaporates rapidly, thus making skin feels rough, cracked, and itchy.

dry-skin-problem-during-winter

During winter, dry skin problem care cannot be underestimated by simply treated using lotions and moisturizers that can be bought at regular supermarkets. As we know that Itching and cracked skin during winter is not only disturbing, but also poses risks to turn into a rash. In addition, dry skin problem experienced during winter can also makes you look older than your age should be. Then we have to pay close attention whenever our skin began to itch and feels dryer, then it’s time for us to consider the specific dry skin treatment as soon as possible to solve this problem before it getting worse.

Below are some tips that we can take to overcome dry skin problems before it getting worse.

  • Drinks Lots of water

Dry skin problem is generally caused by lack of moisture levels in the skin layer. In people with oily skin types, the layer of fat on the skin holds moisture on the skin so the skin lapiasn not easily become dry and cracked.
During winter, humidity levels become very low and cause skin to lose moisture quickly. Ironically, the people trying to overcome this problem by using space heaters and shower with hot water, which basically eliminates even more skin moisture.

For that, by consuming more water, then our body has enough water reserves to be used by the respiratory system of the skin, and then keep skin moist.

  • Consume more of healthy fat contained foods.

The function of fat within the skin layer is as a shield that prevented radiation from outside the body such as pollution and/or UV radiation, as well as holding evaporation of water from the skin layer. So by consuming more foods that contain healthy fats will help increase the amount of fat in the skin layer thus makes our skin more protected from dryness. Types of healthy fats can be found in some foods such as Omega3 supplements, Fish Salmon, Tuna, Fruit Avocado, Olive Oil, and food legumes.

  • Use only mild soap and skin cleanser.

during the winter, avoid using soap and skin cleansers containing alcohol. For toilet soap, make sure you select a bath soap that is rich in natural oils, which are very helpful in forming a barrier layer of the skin by trapping moisture remains in the layer of our skin.

How to Choose the Right Dry Skin Moisturizers

Posted by admin on Nov 28, 2009

Many people suffer from dry skin the reasons for which could be varied from being attributed to the climate, pollutants, medical problems, and even to bathing with harsh soaps. One of the best ways to get rid of dry skin is to understand what the cause to dry skin is and if it is due to some lifestyle habit this needs to be altered or eliminated so that it will have a significant effect on reducing symptoms of dry skin.

In addition to correcting lifestyle habits, one might gain benefit from using some dry skin products like a moisturizer. A dry skin moisturizer is of some importance in alleviating symptoms of dry skin as it will help keep the skin hydrated and prevent loss of moisture from the skin.dry-skin-moisturizers

There are many different types of dry skin moisturizers available in the market today some beneficial and some even harmful to the skin. For this reason, one should be very careful while assessing and purchasing a moisturizer for use against dry skin as there are some harmful products that can cause more harm and increase the symptoms of dry skin rather than reducing the symptoms.

So, while purchasing a dry skin moisturizer one should definitely have a look at the ingredients in the product and avoid any product that has harmful ingredients in it like alcohol, petrolatum, unnecessary synthetic fragrances, mineral oils, paraben, etc. Some of these ingredients are used in the product to help preserve the product better while can have untoward adverse effects on the skin when used.

In order to get the best benefits of a dry skin moisturizer while avoiding any adverse side effects, it is best to avoid the use of products that have synthetic or harmful components in it and stick to the use of products that have more amounts of active natural ingredients in them. These will not only have a beneficial action on reducing symptoms of dry skin, it will also have other favorable actions in keeping your skin soft and supple.

Some of the active natural ingredients that you can look for in a dry skin moisturizer will include the presence of Vitamins A and E, keratin, hyaluronic acid, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), aloe vera, jojoba oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, shea butter, avocado, macadamia, etc.

The dry skin moisturizer could be water based or oil based in nature. Depending on the severity of the dry skin, the appropriate moisturizer needs to be picked up. If the symptoms are more severe, oil based moisturizers can be used.

These are more preferred to be used right after taking bath when the skin is still damp so that whatever moisture is present in the skin is retained without drying. The water based dry skin moisturizers can be used at other times of the day when any signs of dry skin are felt.
There are even some moisturizers that come in combination with sunscreens. These can also be opted for if you have an active life where you need to be outdoors for several hours in a day as overexposure to the sun can have hazardous effects on your skin as well as cause a worsening of symptoms of dry skin.

If there are other severe symptoms of dry skin, the use of only a dry skin moisturizer might not help. It may need the use of other dry skin products too to help reduce the symptoms. If symptoms still persist, it is best not to delay and seek immediate medical help before the symptoms turn too severe.

Tips on Choosing an Effective Dry Skin Lotion

Posted by admin on Nov 16, 2009

Dry skin is a problem that many face quite frequently and is accentuated by many factors that occur in the nature such as dry climate, overexposure to sun, pollutants in the atmosphere, etc. While effective dry skin treatment will usually be limited to identifying the cause and eliminating it, the use of some dry skin lotions might also be warranted to help overcome the problem more effectively. These lotions can also help in providing effective maintenance of the skin and thus help in reducing recurrence of dry skin problems. dry-skin-lotion

When choosing any dry skin lotion for dry skin treatment, some basic things should be borne in mind. One should remember that the products should be chosen with care to help provide maximum relief from dry skin and should be based on a thorough research rather than trying one product after the other.

The first and foremost thing to remember while choosing any dry skin lotion is to avoid any product that contains synthetic ingredients in them or contains ingredients like alcohol, paraben, petrolatum, fragrances, etc as these ingredients are harmful to the skin and will cause more harm than good. These ingredients are generally present in the product to help improve the shelf life of the product rather than to do any good to the skin.

While choosing a dry skin lotion, it is best to stick to products that contain natural ingredients in them. But, one such ingredient that is passed off as natural is mineral oils. These are also toxic to the skin and will not help in alleviating dry skin rather it increases the problem.

Some of the natural ingredients that you can look out for while choosing a dry skin lotion would be ones that contain a rich concentration of vitamins such as vitamin E and vitamin A. Also, you can look out for ingredients like Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), hyaluronic acid, and keratin as these have beneficial actions in providing your skin with moisturizing effects and help in retaining the moisture in the skin.

While it is essential to choose a dry skin lotion with natural and active ingredients, you should also know what lotions you need to use to help effectively counter dry skin problems.

The most basic of all lotions that one can use is a moisturizer to help the skin retain moisture in it. These lotions should be used immediately after a bath to help the skin retain moisture before it gets dried out. Another dry skin product that is commonly used is a sunscreen. This will help prevent damage to the skin caused by overexposure to the sun. Another dry skin lotion that can be used is a combination of a moisturizer and a sunscreen.

If the symptoms of dry skin are more severe and involves symptoms like itching, flaking, cracking, redness, inflamed skin, etc then basic dry skin lotions will not be very helpful in reducing the symptoms. Instead, a dry skin lotion that contains an emollient should be used. The emollients will help in healing of the skin and in alleviating the symptoms of dry skin.

If these dry skin lotions are not helpful in reducing your symptoms, it is best to consult a qualified medical professional for help at the earliest as early intervention will help prevent worsening of symptoms and causing the problem to become more chronic.

The Best Way to Approach Dry Skin Therapy

Posted by admin on Nov 6, 2009

Dry skin is a common problem that afflicts more than 20 percent of the population throughout the world. As this is an annoying problem, many people try out different remedies by using different types of dry skin products that are available for dry skin therapy. However, the degree of success that one gets by using different products is limited and variable and usually they end up with chronic dry skin problems.

The reason for this limited success is due to one small problem that they fail to address – the cause for dry skin. Yes, unless the cause to any problem is not eliminated no matte what remedy or product is used, the problem will not go away and will only be occurring periodically as and when the opportunity arises.

So, if you are suffering from chronic dry skin or want to prevent chronic occurrence of dry skin, then you should approach dry skin therapy with some difference. First and foremost, it is essential not to just use one product after the other to try and overcome dry skin. It is essential to first identify what factors are contributing to the occurrence of dry skin and eliminate these causes and then use the appropriate dry skin products to help you reduce the symptoms as well as avoid recurrence of the condition.

Dry skin can be attributed to a variety of causes that we encounter in our day to day lives. Some such causes can include:

  • Taking long hot water baths. Usage of very hot water or taking bath for a long time can induce drying of the skin and these should be avoided.
  • Use of harsh soaps and aromatic bath oils. These should be replaced with the use of mild cleansers or soaps.
  • Too much exposure to the sun. Avoid direct exposure to the sun and use a sunscreen when going out.
  • Harsh dry or cold climate. These have a tendency to dry out the skin and eliminate moisture content of the skin. Use appropriate moisturizers right after taking a bath to eliminate drying of the skin.
  • Use of air conditioners or heating systems. These have a tendency to cause dryness of the skin. Avoid the use of air conditioners as much as possible. If a heating system is used, then it is best to also use a humidifier or a vaporizer in the room to help retain skin moisture.
  • Synthetic clothing can also help contribute to dry skin problems. These should be replaced by the use of cotton clothing to allow the skin to breathe and remain soft and supple.
  • As we have seen, many lifestyle causes are attributed to the occurrence of dry skin. Instead of just using some products blindly to eliminate dry skin, it is first essential to think and analyze as to what is causing dry skin. When these causes are eliminated or corrected, it will go a long way in dry skin therapy and eliminate the problem and reduce the chances of the condition becoming chronic.

If products need to be used for dry skin therapy, it is best to stick to basic natural products to help alleviate the problem. It is best to avoid products that contain synthetic ingredients or ingredients like alcohol, petrolatum, paraben, etc as these have a tendency to dry out the skin more and will cause more harm than good.

Remember, dry skin therapy is not just the use of some or the other product that is available to you. It is the correction of many lifestyle habits and the use of natural products to help alleviate the symptoms, reducing recurrence and avoiding the condition from becoming a chronic problem.

Aging and Dry Skin Treatment

Posted by admin on Nov 4, 2009

Dry skin can occur in any individual of any age although the occurrence is seen to rise as the person’s age advances or in other words, an aged person is more likely to suffer from problems of dry skin than a younger person.

People try out a variety of home remedies to counter dry skin. The response that one gets to such dry skin treatments is also different for people of differing ages with older people less likely to gain benefits that a younger person gets.

Let us now see why aging has an influence in increasing the occurrence of dry skin and why older people suffer more from this common condition.

The skin of people contains important glands like the sebaceous glands and the sweat glands. The sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum. This sebum is responsible for holding the moisture within the skin and making it soft and supple. The sweat glands as most of us know produce sweat that helps in regulating body temperature and removing harmful toxins from the body. It is also helpful in preventing the multiplication of harmful bacteria on the skin surface.

As age advances, the activity of the sebaceous glands and the sweat glands gradually reduces. This rate of reduced activity is seen to be higher among women than in men. As these glands play a role in maintaining the moisture content of the skin, their reduced activity is responsible for the formation of dry skin.

Also, as age advances, the response of the skin to lifestyle issues responsible for dry skin formation also becomes higher. For example, the skin becomes more sensitive to chemicals present in harsh soaps or hand sanitizers causing the occurrence of dry skin.

As the response to stimuli is exaggerated, even the dry skin treatment in the elderly will have some amount of variation than the treatment that is undertaken for correcting dry skin in a younger person.

While lifestyle changes like avoiding long baths or showers, avoiding the use of harsh soaps, avoiding the use of air conditioners and humidifiers, avoiding too much exposure to direct sunlight, etc are commonly advocated both in the elderly and the young to counter dry skin, some important precautions need to be exercised while providing dry skin treatment in the elderly.

Important among them is the increased care that needs to be taken while using any products for dry skin treatment. The sensitivity of the skin to these products is greatly increased in the elderly and might cause more harm than good. So, if products are used, they should be used with caution.

Mild soaps or cleansers are the best when it comes to dry skin treatment in the elderly. These have the quality of avoiding unnecessary irritation to the skin while being safe to use even while cleansing the sensitive dry skin of the elderly person.

Emollients to soothe chapped or flaky areas of dry skin is also advocated but with the necessary care and caution. If there is any sensitivity seen, the product is immediately stopped and necessary medical care is sought at the earliest. Instead, natural products like coconut oil can also be used to soothe the skin and to provide some lubrication and softness to the skin and helping the skin to retain the moisture.

If any of the home remedies that you are trying for dry skin treatment in the elderly do not have the desired effects and the symptoms are continuing to worsen, it is best to seek medical help at the earliest.

Humidification – An Important Part of Dry Skin Treatment

Posted by admin on Oct 27, 2009

Dry skin is a common skin ailment afflicting a huge percentage of the population. Though it is not a serious condition in many, it has the potential to worsen in many people and cause annoying complications. So, it becomes essential to recognize this condition in as early a stage as possible and correct it with the appropriate dry skin treatment.

While dry skin treatment will vary from person to person and will involve providing some medication if the condition is more severe, generally the condition will not involve providing any form of prescription medication and will only involve incorporating some lifestyle changes and using some skin products to correct the condition.

A variety of causes might be attributed to the development of dry skin and many of these are related to the lifestyle of the person. Some of the common attributes that contribute to the development of dry skin include the use of harsh soaps, harsh skin products, taking long baths, use of certain bath products, use of air conditioners, exposure to the sun, dry weather, some hormonal changes, etc.

While some of the conditions that contribute to the development of dry skin cannot be remedied without medical intervention, for example, hormonal causes, many of the contributing factors to dry skin can be remedied by incorporating appropriate lifestyle changes without any other dry skin treatment.

One such cause for dry skin development is the dryness of the air in the atmosphere. This is often caused by the existence of dry climate and accentuated by the use of air conditioners or room heating systems. The use of such artificial systems is a huge contributing factor for the development of dry skin. In such conditions, the use of skin products for dry skin treatment is not likely to give much relief as the causative factor is not being addressed.

In such a case, dry skin treatment will involve not only the use of dry skin products like moisturizers and certain oils it will also involve increasing the humidity of the indoor atmosphere by using a humidifier or a vaporizer. While the basic principle of either a humidifier or a vaporizer will remain the same and will involve improving humidity in the air, it will only do it in different methods.

While vaporizers primarily use steam or a heating mechanism to improve the humidity in the air, the humidifiers will involve using a propeller or an evaporating mechanism to improve the humidity in the atmosphere. Some types will also involve the use of ultrasonic transducers to improve the humidity in the air.

Keeping indoor plants is also effective in removing dryness in the air and thus improving the humidity in the atmosphere. But, it is essential to water these plants otherwise there is no effect in improving the humidity of the air.

For effective dry skin treatment, the humidity in the atmosphere should be at a level of about 50% and these vaporizers or humidifiers need to be used to maintain the inner atmosphere to this percentage to help retain the moisture content in the skin.

But, just improving the humidity in the air will not help overcome the problems of dry skin. Other lifestyle change like the intake of adequate amount of water everyday is also a must to improve the condition and provide effective relief against dry skin. Many a times, no other dry skin treatment will be necessary apart from incorporating these lifestyle changes to overcome the problem.
