The soaps and body washes available in the market can rob the skin of its natural oils and moisture. Very often people are not very prudent and careful about the choice of their soaps. They fail to realize that certain soaps can prove to be extremely detrimental to the skin.

Lucky for us, there are soaps and body washes that contain a certain amount of moisturizing cream in them. These can be very good for the skin not only for immediate results but in the long run as well.

Soaps for dry skin may contain drops of Vitamin E and D as well. Other essentials like sodium and potassium are also included in the soap.

Using mild soap with high water content can be useful for the skin as well. While using soaps you should bear in mind a few essential things:

Firstly, avoid using soap too often on the skin especially the face. During summers, there is a tendency to keep washing the face ever so often. Try and avoid that. Use soap only once a day mostly during a bath. At other times, try using a facial cleanser or a face wash.

Many a time people use soap ever so often because they have dry skin. And soap greatly perpetuates dry skin. Thus it is a vicious circle wherein you are tempted to keep using soap on your face very frequently.

Mild soaps are a safe option. You can use a mild soap more frequently than a harsh one. However, it is advisable to limit the usage to two or three washes.

It is claimed that body washes are a safer alternative to soaps. Although this is not entirely true, you cannot deny the fact that body washes are much milder than soaps mostly because they have a watery base.

Soaps have been around for years now and there is no doubt that they are going to stick around for some more time. You need to be sure if the soap you are using is dermatologically tested and recommended only then purchase it. It is better to be safe than sorry.

A common problem amongst the wide range of people, dry skin can affect a person in summers or winters. If left untreated it can lead to patches and wrinkles on the skin and further cause skin diseases in the future. Dry skin patches can be most pronounced on the face, elbows and knees. However, the patches on the face can be extremely discomforting and embarrassing. Dry skin patches can cause severe itching and the rubbing of this area further aggravates the problem. It may even lead to infections and other skin problems. These dry patches along with dehydration and chemical use can also be caused due to the side effects of certain types of medicines and changes in hormones during pregnancy. Certain illnesses may also be responsible for flaky and patchy skin.

A condition called Seborrhoeic Dermatitis affects the face and scalp resulting in scaly, red, and patchy skin. It is mainly caused due to the lack of Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B2. It can be treated using medicines prescribed by a dermatologist.

Many a times, dry skin patches are a result of allergic reaction to a number of chemicals in products etc. These products need not necessarily be a skin product. It could be something like jewelry especially imitation jewelry and certain types of perfumes. Along with patches one can also develop blisters, rashes and a strong burning sensation.

Dry patchy skin is also a result of aging. As we age, the collagen in the skin and the elastic is lost. This can lead to a number of skin imperfections, one of them being patches.

Body washes and soaps can also lead to patches on the skin depending on the chemical content in them. Some soap can cause allergies or can severely rob the skin of the natural moisture and oils. Use of moisturizing soaps can be very beneficial to the skin and can prevent patches. However, it is advisable to use facial cleanser or face wash on the face rather than any kind of soap.

Thus there are a number of reasons for dry skin patches which are avoidable and therefore should be prevented.

Many people today have become very conscious and skeptical about the use of artificial lotions and moisturizers to tackle their dry skin problems. Some products are outright ineffective and some others may be detrimental to the skin in the long run. Under such circumstances, the reliance and preference for natural or home remedies to tackle dry skin problems is increasing. Given below are a few natural remedies that have been successfully used by many and are even found in artificial moisturizers.

Use of olive oil or almond oil to massage your face and body right before you go to bed can work wonders for your skin.

Always make sure your liquid intake in general and water intake in particular is high.

Use only lukewarm water to bathe and wash your face even in winters as warm water perpetuates dry skin.

A mashed banana applied to your face and neck every morning for 10 to 15 minutes is also very helpful to get rid of dry skin.

Rose water and lime juice are very good for dry skin. Sprinkle it on your face and leave it for sometime. Wipe it of with a clean towel. It is the most inexpensive treatment to dry skin.

Castor Oil and avocado oil can be used on the feet as the skin here is harder and different from that on the face.

Have a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamins and Minerals as it increases blood circulation and provides the much required nourishment to the skin.

Do light exercises on a regular basis. Do not stress yourself out a lot. Avoid sleeping late or eating junk food or consuming alcohol and caffeine disproportionately.

You can also add lavender oil to your bath water. Occasionally you can try a milk bath as well.

Mixing unpastuerized milk with mustard and applying it on the face for about 25 minutes or so is a real miracle worker.

Egg yolk is also really good for your face. You can simply apply it over your face and wash it off. You can even mix with rose water and lime or orange juice to form a paste and keep it on the face for sometime.

A huge variety of masks to prevent dry skin can be made in the closed quarters of your house to deal with the dry skin condition. The advantages of this are plenty. You can experiment with a variety of food items without the fear of any sort of side effect. It is cheap and it is absolutely safe. All you need is to invest a little time to prepare the mask. The following are some of the most masks amongst women using them for a long time now:

A mixture of vegetable oil, lanolin cream and cucumber juice applied for 15 minutes followed by a wash with herbal extract is very popular amongst women. Make sure to work it out into a paste.

To rid yourself of wrinkles on dry skin all you need to do is boil grated cabbage in milk until it becomes soft. Then apply the paste on the face and neck for about 20 minutes. You can also add an egg yolk and lemon juice to this mixture.

A mixture of honey and olive oil heated until it becomes a fluid and applied to the face followed by a covering with a cloth for about 20 minutes also works very well. However, a word of caution needs to be exercised here. Just in case you have red capillaries across your face it is better to soak a wet towel in potato juice and dab it all over your face.

A mixture of egg yolk, potato and milk also forms a good facial and neck mask for wrinkled dry skin.

Thus a lot of permutations and combinations are available at your disposal in case you wish to use facial masks. The most common items that go into making any kind of mask for dry skin includes: lemon juice, egg yolk, milk, potato and cucumber. Honey can also be used equally commonly. However, some people are known to be allergic to honey or even milk for that matter. In such cases these elements can easily be substituted with the equally effective others. Dry skin masks are easy to make and are indeed very effective.

To broadly classify (as a variety of beauty products do), one may say there are three types of skin: normal skin, oily skin and dry skin. While it is true that the problem of acne and pimple can affect any of these three types, it is most pronounced for people with dry skin.

One should bear in mind that our skin can experience all the three types in varying proportions depending on the weather and other conditions.

Dry skin acne is most pronounced in the winter and many people experience severe distress due to the frequent outbreaks. Since winter results in a drastic drop in the level of moisture in the skin, other factors like use of heaters etc can contribute a great deal to the increasing dryness of the skin. One experiences cracking of the skin around the mouth and nose which perpetuates a constant urge to itch and scratch. When you engage in constant scratching the skin becomes highly vulnerable to the rise of acne and increase in bacteria and infections. Thus, use of moisturizing lotions and cold creams is highly recommended during the months of winter to control the problem.

Using extremely hot water on the face and body can cause the skin to lose moisture and therefore become dry. Use of lukewarm warm is the best under these circumstances. Applying moisturizer soon after a bath or wash also helps a great deal in preventing dryness and the eventual acne.

During summers, the situation is a bit different. Because of the humidity, though the moisture retention is good; the heat in combination with the sweat can severely increase the number of pores in the skin thus making it all the more susceptible to acne and other forms of bacteria. Use of sunscreens with a high SPF balance is undoubtedly the ideal option. The use should be frequent and uniform all over the exposed areas of the face and body.

Acne in dry skin can be taken care of even by certain acne control creams specially designed to curb the emergence of acne. Many of these have given good results.

There was a time when skin care merely meant the daily scrub. We could go still further behind and talk about Cleopatra washing her skin with milk.

Then there came the era of anti-wrinkle, dark spot removal kind of creams.

Though all those creams are still around, skin treatment technology seems to be getting as cutting edge as computer technology. Think of the latest trends in anti-aging creams, such as the one made by the Dermajuv Company.

If you are seeking Dermajuv reviews then just follow the links I just gave you.

Like I said at the beginning of this post, there was a time when basic rehydration was enough. Now it is about stem cell research. Think of it this way, earlier you had the basic pharmacist who would get you your products. Now product selection and recommendation is in the realm of the advanced and cutting-edge dermatology research labs.

Of course, you need to ensure that you are reading up the latest in trade as well as scientific magazines. Advanced science comes with its own set of risks. But the astute person can easily find a way to inform themselves about the pros and cons of the skin care products out there.

And that is what this blog is all about in the first place. Helping people improve the quality of their skin.

What is dry skin really? It is mainly skin that is rough, lacks luster and gives frequent itching sensation. Although most of the times the environmental and climatic conditions are responsible for causing dry skin, dry skin can also be due to genetic factors and hormonal changes in the body. A number of vitamins in the body is also responsible for the keeping the skin at its best. Lack or inadequate quantity of any of these vitamins can affect the skin. There are a number of vitamin supplements and pills available in the market. Some are over the counter pills while others are prescription drugs. Apart from supplements the deficiency of vitamins in the body can also be fulfilled with a healthy and balanced diet.

There are different kinds of vitamins responsible for healthy skin:

Vitamin A: the retinol and the beta carotene forms of Vitamin A are the most essential for healthy glowing skin. Vitamin A plays a decisive role in production and reparation of skin cells. Lack of Vitamin A can also lead to dry hair, dry eyes and broken nails. It is important to realize that excess amounts of Vitamin A especially the beta carotene form can be detrimental to the skin as well.

Vitamin A is found in many vegetables like carrots, spinach, peas and fruits like apricots, oranges etc. Fortified juices and many cereals, supplements and multivitamins also contain a healthy dose of vitamin A

Vitamin E: is known to moisturize the skin from within thus making it smooth and preventing dry spots. The sources of Vitamin E include corn, wheat germ, carrots, oats, sunflower oil and asparagus.

Vitamin D: is extremely important for the skin. While harsh sunlight and heat is detrimental to the skin, the early morning sunlight is extremely beneficial to the skin. The sources of Vitamin D are sunlight, fortified milk and cereals.

A diet aimed at increasing the intake of vitamins in the body can help a great deal to heal dry damaged skin. Vitamin supplements can also compensate for the loss of vitamins in the body. However, it is advisable to stick to more natural ways acquiring vitamins.

While some people experience dryness of the skin during winter months when there is less moisture in the air, there are many that suffer from natural skin dryness. Using creams and lotions works for many as they not only protect the skin but hydrate it too. Other methods of natural dry skin treatment are to eliminate the causes of dryness as abstain from too much sun, harsh soaps and changes in the diet. Some other natural dry skin treatments are as follows:

Natural oils and vitamins: the most effective of the vitamins that work well for the treatment of skin dryness is Vitamin E. Therefore creams containing vitamin E should be purchased. Moreover its effect can be enhanced by supplementing it with vitamin E capsules. This would help the skin from the inside. Other natural remedies include taking natural oils present in flaxseed oil, primrose oil and omega 3 oils that are found in fish.

Nutritional changes in the diet: the health of the skin can be greatly improved by consuming fresh fish which would provide the essential omega acids that work very well for treatment of dry skin. Other changes that can be made are lesser intake of beverages like tea and coffee as they act as diuretics that soak up the body water making the skin dry. Water is an essential ingredient for the treatment of dry skin. As opposed to the fact that oils are essential for healthy skin, it is water that is extremely necessary. One should at least drink 8 glasses of water. This would hydrate the skin and keep it healthy and moisturized.

Lotions and creams to hydrate the skin: one should use creams and lotions that have ingredients like plant oils, glycerin, herbal extracts etc. as the more natural ingredients that a cream has, the better it works for the skin. Creams containing chemicals like retinol, hydroxyl acids or alpha lipoic acid, exfoliate the skin causing it to become dry and hence must be avoided.

In addition to these treatment methods, increasing home humidity, using moisturizers and night creams are effective ways to treat naturally dry skin.

A Worrying Trend
Some statistics estimate that as high as seventy percent of children suffer from some form of dry skin condition. Unfortunately this sometimes leads to eczema given the fact that children’s skins are generally more prone to damage than those of adults. All parents should be concerned about these trends because nothing exercises the conscience of a parent than the health or wellbeing of their child. The statistics are high but the worrying thing is that there are solutions that people are simply not taking up in the fight against dry skin.

The Reasons for Dry Skin
Upon birth, the child will lose the slippery protection of amniotic fluid. This means that the skin has to quickly adjust to the new harsh environment of the world at large. This can eventually lead to the development of dry skin and a certain level of redness. If the family home is heated during the winter period, then this can remove moisture from the air. Moisture is crucial to maintaining a moist healthy skin.

Bathing is important in order to maintain a certain level of hygiene and to give the germs away. However if it is done too frequently then it can remove the essential oils from the skin thus causing eczema. If the child is taken for a swim during the warmer weather, that can also lead to an increase in their exposure to salt and chlorine. These substances can have the effect of drying the skin or causing some severe skin rashes.

Treatment of the Conditions and Preventative Measures
Some people who can afford it include humidifiers in their home furnishings to ensure that there is moisture in the house at all times. This gives the skin the opportunity to rehydrate on a regular basis. There are many vaporizers that are now available to the ordinary markets and therefore parents should take the opportunity to stock them. In terms of dealing with the cold, the parents are advised to use warm clothing rather than always relying on heaters. Gloves and mittens can become an effective tool against reduced humidity during the colder periods of the year.

Bathing should only be done when necessary. Some guides advise that bathing should only occur once every four days although for some parents this is not acceptable. However daily or multi daily baths are not a very good idea. Bubble baths also tend to cause dry skin conditions among toddlers. You should use moisturizing baby products in the bath and get the baby to have some oil within the water that they bathe in. This ensures that even if the moisture is being lost, there is an opportunity for replenishment.

The final measure is to have vigilance when looking after the baby. If it appears that there is dryness or reddening then the parent needs to make sure that this is addressed as a matter of urgency. Where the parent neglects to deal with the skin problems they can turn into something more serious such as eczema which can be much more difficult to treat.

Find that Reliable Cure
If you happen to have sensitive skin or acne then the onus is on you to take the necessary steps to ensure that you protect your skin. The market is flooded with acne treatments that primarily rely on reducing the amount of oil production within the skin. However this will cause those with dry skin even more problems.

Moreover some of the ingredients that form these treatments have been known to increase the incidence of skin irritation and flaking. Therefore the utmost caution and care has to be taken before you move onto dubious treatments. This is not to say that all or most of the acne treatments on the market today are unreliable. It just shows that they may not be suitable for everyone especially those who suffer from dry skin anyway.

The Causes of Skin Sensitivity
Age increases skin dryness in most cases unless you are fortunate enough to have different genetic makeup. This is because at this stage in life the skin started to reduce the amount of sebum that it can produce on a regular basis. Furthermore the natural collagen or elastin within the skin loses some of its strength and sheen. This can lead to less flexible and drier skin.

When ladies reach the menopausal stages of their lifespan, they will have significantly reduced levels of estrogen and this could result in dry skin as well. When people live in climactic conditions that are not particularly hot, the chances are that there will be less moisture for the skin within the atmosphere. That is why dry skin can become a problem in winter. Modern life has also brought us cosmetics and fabric cleaners which have chemicals that irritate the skin when used.

Some Remedies
The combination of acne and dry skin can be difficult to combat but there are several remedies that you might want to experiment with before you settle on the one that works for you. Cleansing preparations are one of the ways in which you can make sure that you skin is ready to deal with the harsh realities of the environment. You can start off with the mildest of cleansers combined with a moisturizing agent to give you skin that extra lift before exposing it to the world.

The standard acne cleaners can sometimes be very harsh on the skin and could end up increasing your problems. As a rule of thumb, you should always first consider the gentler cleaners before going for the harsher versions. You are also advised to wash you face on a fairly infrequent basis and with gentle materials so that you do not run the risk of drying it out and causing dry skin.

Most reputable manufacturers will indicate the level of dryness that their product is directed to. If you are dealing with the combination of acne and dry skin you will need to read the labels carefully. They will contain clues that might save your skin and reduce the amount of money that you are spending on improving your facial appearance.
